Reading's 18th Ward trick-or-treats with a fire engine
Tanya Melendez of the 18th Ward Neighborhood Alliance knew she had to do something special for the kids this Halloween.
Most children in the 18th Ward weren't trick-or-treating this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
So, Melendez and John Masano, CEO of Tom Masano Auto Group started brainstorming.
"How can we do something safe and fun?" Melendez said. "Everyone loves a firetruck."
Masano recently purchased a former Reading firetruck at a city auction.
"Let's just escort the firetruck, make a lot of noise and hand out some candy," Melendez said.
With the help of about 15 volunteers from Alvernia University and Berks Catholic High School the group handed out candy as they walked through the Oakbrook and Millmont neighborhoods Saturday evening.
Mayor Eddie Moran also participated in the event.
